Inplants must become 'communications facilitators' says Canon

Canon-commissioned research from Rochester Institute of technology has found the inplant sector booming.

Corporate Reprographics: Trends and Opportunities, conducted under the guidance of RIT's Professor Emeritus Frank Romano, interviewed nearly 700 corporate reprographics department (CRD) managers, print buyers and industry observers to produce what Canon calls "a comprehensive freeze-frame of the corporate reprographics market and researchers' predictions."

According to the report, CRDs save their parent organisations an average of 15% of the cost of outsourced printing. The number of CRDs has increased by 20% over the last decade, and the volume of colour is growing, and now equals monochrome page volume; wide-format volume is also rising fast. The report also found that many CRDs have implemented a web-to-print solution that had either 'exceeded' or 'far exceeded' their expectations.

Canon European marketing manager Mark Lawn said that inplants had to rebrand as the 'communications facilitators' of the future to prove their worth to their organisations: "CRDs need to up their game in two main areas: service and efficiency. Despite the fact that 90% of organisations view print as 'critical', senior management is [often] not clear about the true value of CRD."
